Podcast ad rates: what to charge per episode

Podcast ads are priced per 1,000 downloads in the first 30 days. Libsyn puts a 60-second host-read ad at about $25 CPM, a 30-second read at $18 to $22, and dynamically inserted ads around $18. Business and health shows sit at the top; comedy and games a little below.

How to work out your price

  1. Count downloads per episode in the first 30 days after release, not lifetime downloads.
  2. Divide by 1,000 and multiply by the CPM for your genre and ad length.
  3. Host-read ads earn more than pre-recorded or dynamically inserted spots, so say which one you are offering.
  4. Small shows often sell a run of episodes as a flat package. Work out the CPM math first so the package price has a basis.

What CPM means

CPM is the price per 1,000 views (the M is Roman for a thousand). Brands use it to compare creators of different sizes. If a brand pays $25 CPM and your videos get 40,000 views, the sponsorship is worth $25 × 40 = $1,000.

Followers matter less than views. A brand pays for the people who will actually see the ad, so use your average views on recent posts. For podcasts the count is downloads in the first 30 days, and for newsletters it is subscribers the issue goes to.

Common questions

What are typical podcast ad rates?

About $18 to $26 per 1,000 downloads for a 60-second ad, with host-read ads at the top of that range. A show with 5,000 downloads per episode would charge around $130 for one 60-second host-read ad.

How much can a small podcast charge for an ad?

The math is the same at any size: a show with 1,000 downloads per episode at $25 CPM is about $25 per ad. That is why small shows often sell a month of episodes together or add a newsletter or social mention to the package.

Is a 30-second ad cheaper than a 60-second ad?

Yes. Libsyn's 30-second host-read average is $18 to $22 CPM, against about $25 for 60 seconds.

Every number in this calculator comes from a published source listed below. Where sources disagree or are thin, the calculator shows a range and the confidence label says so. The data file is data/sponsorship-benchmarks.json.

How each price is built

  • YouTube videos. The typical rate starts from ThoughtLeaders' median price per 1,000 views for your subscriber band, taken from 9,002 booked integrations. It is then adjusted for niche by SponsorRadar's niche midpoint relative to the 17-niche average ($27.65), and kept inside SponsorRadar's niche range, which also sets low and high.
  • TikTok, Instagram and Shorts. Kolect's median agreed fee per 1,000 average views for your follower tier, adjusted by Kolect's niche figures. Low and high follow the spread of agreed fees in that tier. Shorts use TikTok rates because 1stCollab found the two priced alike. Instagram feed and Stories are scaled from Reels using AWISEE's format ranges (low confidence).
  • Podcasts. Libsyn Ads' host-read CPMs, by genre where Libsyn publishes one, cross-checked with Ad Results Media.
  • Newsletters. beehiiv and Paved ranges per 1,000 subscribers. Finance, business and technology use beehiiv's B2B range.
  • X and Twitch. No dataset of real deals is good enough. X uses follower tiers that HubSpot quotes from Influencer Marketing Hub; Twitch uses StreamScheme's viewer-hour rule of thumb. Both are labeled low confidence.
  • Placement and extras. A dedicated YouTube video is 2× to 3× an integration (InfluencerFee). Usage rights and exclusivity follow impact.com; whitelisting follows Influencer Marketing Hub. Short mentions borrow the podcast 30-second to 60-second ratio, which is an analogy and is labeled as one.
  • Rounding. Prices are rounded to $5, $10, $50 or $100 depending on size. They are starting points for a negotiation, not quotes.

What we do not know: no public dataset covers dedicated YouTube videos, Shorts, Instagram Stories or X posts on their own at scale. Those rows lean on ratios and rules of thumb, and the ranges are wide on purpose. Brand budgets also vary by country; most of these datasets are US-heavy.
